As temperatures plummet and the rain continues to fall with no sign of stopping soon, we can’t spend time outside.
Nor would we want to.
However, it’s important to keep the paving on your driveways, paths and patios clean to avoid a bigger job when spring comes around.
Here’s what you can do to make life easier:
Acting now saves time later
During the late stages of Autumn, after leaves have fallen from the trees, is an opportune moment to clean.
If you can, remove furniture and containers such as plant pots that could be blown around in a storm or by blustery winds.
Alternatively, use plastic or waterproof covers to protect them.
Be sure to tie or weigh them down as well.
Don’t let leaves pile up
You may have to clear the way more than once, but leaves left on the ground for too long can rot and stain your paving.
If they settle, then they could leach pigment.
Some leave a mark much easier because they need only a little moisture to dissolve.
It is a preventative measure, but regularly sweeping a natural stone product during winter is a good habit to have.
Say goodbye to weeds
Even if they’ve stopped growing, or have perished, don’t leave them to decay and become slippery when wet.
Frozen weeds are also harder to clear after it has snowed.
Once weeds, moss and other dirt is out of the way, then its time to sweep and clean the surface.
A wash with soapy water will remove remaining dirt.
There are products for sale that continue to clean without the need for a power washer, a choice worth considering during the coldest months of the year.
Be prepared for snow and ice
Keep handy a small supply of grit or rock salt so you can defrost or thaw your driveway or patio, particularly if you have any inclines.
Table salt works well, but be careful not to use too much – or to leave it too long – because it can cause damage to the surface.
Grit sand helps with grip in icy conditions, although its sharp edges do risk scratching glossy paving.
Keeping water off the stone makes it less likely to freeze.
Watch your step
Cracks are a trip hazard and, left unattended, risk letting in water that can lift paving if it freezes underneath – a likely outcome during winter.
Fill in any gaps, created by lost cement or sand, before they turn into a larger problem.
If you note these tips, then a list of chores to get ready for summer is likely to be much shorter.
