If you thought paving was just a load of old cobbles, think again.
There are so many ways you can get creative with your outdoor space, from devising an eye-catching circular feature for your garden patio, to designing a pretty pathway through your vegetable patch.
Here’s the lowdown on paving accessories.
So why is the appearance of your outdoor space important?
Increasingly, the outside of your home is being treated as an extension of the interior and not only in summer.
Patio heaters and canopies have enabled us to enjoy our gardens all year round.
Paving accessories can be both a practical solution and a design feature.
They are a great way to establish different areas in the garden, or connect them to each other and give a ‘polished’ look to your outside space.
What paving accessories are available?
Setts
Setts, also referred to as Belgian blocks, are broadly rectangular quarried stone with a depth and width of between 75mm and 200mm.
Their lengths range from 75mm to 450mm, and are used in a variety of paving projects.
Cobbles
The main way cobbles differ from setts is their more rounded shape.
They are defined on the Udden–Wentworth scale as having a particle size of 64–256 millimetres (2.5–10.1 in), which is larger than a pebble and smaller than a boulder.
Stepping stones
Stepping stones are singular, flat stones placed in a line, or in other creative ways to create a pathway.
Radius paving kits
Radius paving kits are stones cut to create an attractive circle design for garden or patio and come in a range of colours and designs.
They are easy to install and will last for years to come.
Which paving accessory should I buy?
Cobbles
Anyone who has walked on a cobblestone path will know they can be difficult to walk on (especially in heels) but paving cobbles are much easier to navigate.
They are durable, and low maintenance, and can also be used to edge paths and as a surface barrier for areas where you don’t want people to walk.
Stepping stones
These may appear a whimsical paving accessory and are often used as a bridge over a small body of water like a stream.
However, they are increasingly becoming a feature in gardens, creating charming pathways and can be used to connect different areas in your garden stylishly.
Radius paving kits
A beautiful circle paving feature will enhance the appearance of your garden.
This is the perfect paving accessory for a patio, or a fire pit.
It can focus attention on one spot, and works well to create a stand-alone seating area and add interest or differentiate a particular section.
